Swimming & Weight Loss

There is always much discussion about how effective swimming for losing weight.  I decided to do my own study on the topic since I am A- starting swimming again and B- trying to lose weight.  I’ll share my chart with you weekly but here’s where I am right now.

I’m going to spare some of my dignity by not showing you the corresponding “Weight” that I have on the left side of the chart, but I will tell you that this represents an 11.2 lb weight loss to date!  :-)

  1. I swear I always gain weight when I start swimming again. I read a study once where they compared it to the "whale theory". Your body keeps more fat on it trying to insulate against the water. But, what do "they" know? Good job!

  2. You can totally lose weight from swimming, but to get lean is harder, and I don't believe it's because of the whale theory. It's that the main muscles used are your torso and arms, which just don't burn the same number of calories over time as your butt, quads and hamstrings would, if they were used more in swimming. I added longer kicking sets, and started losing weight, in an unscientific experiment, and no joke, maybe a few weeks into it, a male teammate of mine asked me if I was losing weight, and I think that means something. Well, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it. I get very defensive when it comes to swimming!
